Nelson, New Zealand
Garage Project started as a brewery operated, unsurprisingly, out of a garage in Wellington, New Zealand. Pete Gillespie & Jos Ruffell have evolved their project in the past decade in various directions, including wine. Alex Craighead from Kindeli wine came onboard to collaborate on several “Garage Project Crushed” releases, including a series of “Fairy Bread” field blends of grapes from vineyards in the Nelson and Marlborough areas (across the Cook Strait from Wellington, on the northern end of the South Island).
This red field blend consists of an unusual mix of pinot noir (80%), riesling (10%), and gewürztraminer (10%), fermented (partially carbonic fermentation) with wild yeasts, aged in stainless steel, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. A seriously fun wine, meant to be enjoyed chilled, preferably at a backyard birthday party. The white grapes add a refreshing aromatic lift and mineral streak that complement the slight tannins from the pinot noir. Fresh red fruit on the palate blends with an umami note of ripe tomato and basil.
Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
