“Kowloon” weaves together traditional Kowloon imagery, capturing elements of the Kowloon Walled City, street food vendors, traditional Hong Kong mailboxes, and the famous flower market. The Kowloon Walled City was a densely populated and largely ungoverned enclave within the boundaries of Kowloon City, British Hong Kong.
Originally built as an Imperial Chinese military fort, it became a de jure enclave after the New Territories were leased to the United Kingdom in 1898. It attracted refugees fleeing the renewed Chinese Civil War. By the late 1980s, it housed roughly 35,000 residents within its compact territory of 2.6 hectares (6.4 acres). It was destroyed in 1994 due to overcrowding and its lawless state, and Kowloon Walled City Park was erected in 1995. This drawing was created with fineliner and ink markers.
Artisit:
Jules (julesymaria) is a Brit/Aussie artist who has been lucky enough to live and work in Hong Kong for many years. As part of herseries 'Circle City Scapes', she has focussed on drawing her favourite spots of Hong Kong. She stitch together the old and the new as well as the traditional and the modern, celebrating Hong Kong and all it has to offer. Each piece celebrates the diverse communities which coexist in this metropoulos, highlighting the rich pockets of life which we all savour. Each drawing takes about 30 hours to complete, and is created using Copic fineliners and alcohol ink markers.
