The Yangarra philosophy is to produce wines from our single-vineyard estate, that reflect an authentic sense of place.
The property is 170 total hectares, of which nearly 90 hectares are planted to vine. The remaining 80 hectares are preserved for native vegetation and wildlife and are intended to enhance the symbiotic relationship between the vines and their natural environment.
Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine, and cool evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in the moderate maritime Mediterranean environments.
Produced from the fruit of dry-grown bush vines planted high up in the Estate's elevated vineyards in deep sandy soils. These venerated vines date from 1946 and produce a wine that is complex, perfumed, and elegant with a trademark tannin structure.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 harvest will be remembered for many years, mostly for all the wrong reasons. The growing season was marred by a very hot spring and the bushfires that ravaged vast areas of Australia. We feel incredibly blessed that in McLaren Vale we were untouched by either the fires or smoke taint. The very hot spring did lead to the lowest yields on our records, but as the grapes started their ripening process the weather miraculously cooled to one of the mildest ripening seasons, resulting in wonderful concentration of flavor, retention of natural acidity, and brightness of fruit, but above all beautiful finesse and balanced tannins.
The vineyard is certified Biodynamic (certification # 11587) with Australian Certified Organic. We have quite a practical approach, with our philosophy focused around healthy and alive soil, which involves no use of synthetic herbicides or fungicides, use of compost and biodynamic preparations, use of sheep in winter to graze under vine, and minimal mechanical soil disruption.
